  • Workshop Type: Printing

  • Sessions: 2
  • In-person or Online?: In-person

Workshop Fee (includes materials fee): $225

This is an in-person workshop. As of January 2023, masks are strongly encouraged but not required unless otherwise indicated.

In this beginning linoleum block printing workshop, students will learn how to transfer and carve a simple design into a 5 x 7" linoleum block, then use the Vandercook cylinder press to print their single-color block on either fold-over cards or on quality printmaking paper.

If you're thinking of participating in our Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival in September as a Personal Print artist, this class will teach you how to get started!

This workshop is open to beginners as well as students with some letterpress experience looking for a new way to add imagery to their work.

>> Prerequisite: None <<

Materials to Bring: Ideas for a simple 5x7" design; ideally at least two sketches so the instructor can help choose which will work best.

Date & Time: Saturday & Sunday, May 27 & 28, 2023 :: 10am-3pm

Location: 375 Rhode Island St, San Francisco, CA 94103

NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class.

About the Instructor | Patricia Wakida (she/her)

I'm a bibliophile, artist and writer with a background in trade publishing. My relations to books are kept tangible and toothsome by running wasabi press, making illustrated letterpress books, broadsides, posters and cards on a Chandler and Price tabletop platen press and a small etching press. My book arts education began with an apprenticeship in Japanese papermaking in Mino, Gifu- prefecture, Japan in 1996, followed by an apprenticeship at the Arts and Crafts Press under linoleum block artist and letterpress printer, Yoshiko Yamamoto, in Berkeley, California. I've also taught linoblock carving and letterpress workshops as a teaching assistant in the book arts program at Mills College, the San Francisco Center for the Book, and ASUC Art Studio.

Past Student Reviews:

“Instructor had great energy, very fun, enthusiastic.”

“Experienced instructor, she understood that it was all about the students and what they could learn and make.”
