Design Binding Show

Exhibition :: Design Binding Show / Featuring the Work of Design Binding Intensive Students

Exhibition Run Dates :: August 13 - September 13, 2016

Location :: San Francisco Center for the Book, 375 Rhode Island Street, San Francisco

About the exhibition ::  Over the course of four weeks (July 11 - August 12, 2016) SFCB students enrolled in the Design Binding Intensive studied with visiting instructor / master bookbinder Dominic Riley. The eight enrolled students worked with a text from the Old Style Press and created individually designed bindings for their personalized projects. Each student designed and executed a fine binding for the poem 'A Song About Myself'; text was set in by calligrapher Andy Moore and printed by Nicholas McDowell in 2015.

This specialized class was offered to bookbinding students who had already achieved an advanced level of binding and leatherworking experience. Students participated in all steps necessary to creating a fine design binding; due to the concentrated nature of the workshop,  interested students were asked to apply in advance, stating their previous bookbinding experience and interest in the project. Technical skills incorporated all the technical steps associated with high quality binding, while focusing on design execution, leather decoration, creative gold tooling, and box making.
