This is an in-person workshop. As of January 2023, masks are strongly encouraged but not required unless otherwise indicated. 

Create your own handmade paper using recycled paper! This environmentally friendly process is a great way to personalize your printmaking projects.

In this class students will follow a step-by-step process to create their own handmade paper that can be also done at home or in their studio using simple tools. They will use a blender to make pulp from paper scraps, form their own sheets using a mould and deckle, then transfer (couch) their sheets for drying. The instructor will explain additional methods that might not be achieved in the short class time but that students may pursue on their own.

The class will include examples of different types of handmade papers using various materials and will end with ideas on how to go even further into the papermaking process in the future, such as adding flower petals and other organic materials (“botanical inclusions”) to add color and texture to your paper.

NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class. 
 

About the Instructor | Gino Robair (he/him)

As a composer and visual artist, Gino Robair uses handmade paper and letterpress printing to create unique musical scores. He has an MA and MFA from Mills College and is currently working towards a PhD in Performance Studies at the University of California, Davis, developing performative models for improvised papermaking.
