Masks are no longer required for workshops, though anyone is welcome to wear one if they wish.

Pop-ups are fun. And when they are small they are extra special!

In this workshop you will learn how to make a simple pop-up, not once but four times to create a sweet little book: a Theater Book. You will decide the content of your book and draw little pictures that will fit right onto each 'stage'. To make sure your book is protected we will make a little box for it, too.

The final dimensions will be 2 x 2.25 x 0.5”. Each participant will leave with their own mini pop-up theatre and the ability to create a whole new set at home.

>> Prerequisite: None <<

Materials to Bring: None. All tools and materials will be provided. Students are also welcome to bring any of their own favorite bookbinding tools.

Date & Time: Saturday, July 13, 2024 :: 10am-4pm

Location: 375 Rhode Island St, San Francisco, CA 94103

NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close approximately three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class. We recommend you not wait to register, as workshops that don't meet our minimum enrollment will be canceled, sometimes as much as a week in advance.

About the Instructor | Bettina Pauly (she/her)

Bettina lives in San Francisco and works as both a book artist and a letterpress printer with Kim Vanderheiden at Painted Tongue Studios, Oakland, California. She loves books and boxes both as physical objects and as containers of meaning. She is interested in a variety of folded, sewn and woven structures in which she can incorporate her printing.

Past Student Reviews:

“It was relaxed, no pressure, everyone worked at their own pace, everyone in the class was friendly, Bettina's instruction was clear and helpful and she was generous with materials and I learned a lot.”

“Bettina was great and informative. She helped me a lot when I didn’t understand the steps. Or was patient with repeating what I couldn’t hear.”

“It got me interested in book arts for sure! Will look into more workshops for the future. Thank you!!”
