This is a three session online workshop.

Interested in collage but need a way to contain your ideas? Looking for inspiration and a place to start?

In this workshop, each student will begin with one book. Over 3 weeks we will learn many ways of altering the book: through cutting, gluing, folding, building and excavating stories from one source. We will address issues including: working within a theme, adhesives, covering or incorporating unwanted text and images, how to add and remove from an already bound object, and problem solving together. 

Each class will include a slideshow of examples, demos with space for questions and suggestions, sharing, group troubleshooting, and some time to work alone. Students are encouraged but not required to work between sessions. 

Open to anyone curious and willing, no experience necessary.

Students will be required to provide their own tools and materials.
 

Materials to Bring: 

• A book to alter:

Look for books with limited pages (under 250), at least 8x10" when closed, with a hard cover.
Animal, plant, and flower encyclopedias are often good choices; also time-life books, or a book from the This Fabulous Century series.

AND

• Waxed paper
• Markers--translucent alcohol or watercolor type in 3 colors
• Gesso--2 oz
• Sharpie or other black opaque marker
• Tissue paper, a few sheets and colors
• X-acto knife and blades
• Small cutting mat
• Graphite paper
• Vellum or tracing paper
• Eraser
• Glue stick
• Colored pencils
• Scissors
• Small brush for applying gesso

Optional:

• Single color washi or masking tape
• Spray paint
• Spray adhesive

Date & Time: February 13, 20 & 27, 2024 :: 4-6pm Pacific time

Location: Online over Zoom.

SFCB online workshops are recorded; all registered students will have access to the videos for a month after the final class session.

About the Instructor | Hope Amico (she/her)

Hope Amico (she/her) is a visual artist, writer and educator based in Portland, OR.  Through classes, zines and the Keep Writing postcard project, she is excited to share ways we can support each other creatively. Previously known as gutwrench press, she has led classes online and in-person through the San Francisco Center for the Book, the IPRC, Blackbird Letterpress, Ladies of Letterpress Conference and privately through her own studio.
