Protect delicate books or suites of prints in elegant and durable full-cloth covered lift-top presentation boxes. On Day 1, working from a provided template, students will be guided through the process of constructing custom lift-top boxes for books, suites of prints and other media. On Day 2, Students will themselves design and construct a box for a small book, suite of prints, or object of their choosing. Students will be invited but not required to bring their own materials to work with on their individual projects. All skills learned in Day 1 will now be applied by the student to their individual project including spec'ing and cutting boards, scaling & design.

 >> Prerequisite: Students should have some box making experience. This is not an introductory-level class. <<

Materials to Bring:

  • A small book or object to make a box for (5 x 7" maximum size)
  • Any materials that the student wishes to use on their custom box. Object and materials not really needed till day 2 but please bring on day 1 for us to make a plan.

Date & Time: Saturday & Sunday, April 6 & 7, 2024 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close approximately three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class. We recommend you not wait to register, as workshops that don't meet our minimum enrollment will be canceled, sometimes as much as a week in advance.

About the Instructor | Brian Lieske (he/him)

Brian wandered into SFCB many years ago and continues to haunt the place. He completed both the bookbinding and letterpress cores as well as several of the summer historic structure classes, and now teaches SFCBs Box Making Core classes. He enjoys making fully hand-sewn books and still fights to not over-tighten his kettle stitches. He’s lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years having arrived shortly after completing an MFA at the University of Texas at Austin.

Past Student Reviews:

“Brian did an outstanding job in his careful prep, his well-thought-out and detailed directions and demonstrations, and his patience and generosity of spirit."

"Brian's directions were very clear and comprehensive. He gave a lot of great information about box making in general, and was very helpful and an engaging instructor."

"So much fun!  Good pace and great instruction."
