This is an in-person workshop. Masks are not required for this workshop, though students and instructors are welcome to wear one if they wish.

Learn to make a useful box that's ideal for storing sewing supplies, jewelry, or small tools. The box has a hinged lid and can be opened fully. The interior holds a removable top tray; the bottom compartment is open and can store larger items.

The instructor has developed his own way of making boxes, combining the industrial and artisanal methods of boxmaking. Students will learn basic boxmaking concepts, as well as an understanding of paper and board grain and its importance.

Pietro is known for his marbling, and will provide marbled fabric to use in covering the boxes. Students will learn how to make their own book cloth out of regular fabric.

All skill levels are welcome: the most difficult part of the class will be the choosing of the marbled fabric from the multicolor array of patterns that Pietro will provide.

  • All other tools and materials will be provided. Students are also welcome to bring any of their own favorite bookbinding tools.

About the Instructor | Pietro Accardi (he/him)

Pietro is native to the northwestern Italian city of Turin where his father Gaetano founded and operated "Tipografia Accardi." In 1950s Italy, it was a state of the art printing press. His youth spent in the press lead him to paper marbling, restoration and bookbinding. Pietro moved on from his father’s press to establish "La Legatoria del Sole," an artisanal and production-oriented bookbindery in Turin. It served Turin’s Municipal Archives, public and university libraries. After coming to the U.S. he started teaching at SFCB. Together with his wife Vanessa he has founded Accardi Book Arts: a book arts studio and bindery in Gardnerville, NV to preserve the tradition of handmade books.

Past Student Reviews:

"Pietro is an incredible instructor! He was so kind and supportive and I appreciated that he spent time one-on-one with every student. He was open to tailoring instruction to the level of each student when working with them one-on-one. He had so much knowledge to share and was genuinely excited to see each student experimenting with their own artistic style. I would love to take more classes with him in the future."

“I enjoyed Pietro's lively teaching style! He shared many interesting details about his approach to bookbinding.”

"Pietro is fabulous."
