This is a single session online workshop.

In this introductory workshop, students will learn about the history, techniques, tools, and materials of Korean bookbinding. We will prepare text blocks by binding folded sheets together with paper cords to create an inner binding, and then sew covers to the text blocks to make a five-hole side-stitch book. 

The workshop fee includes a mailed materials kit containing the materials necessary to make one book, including wheat starch/paste. 


Materials to Bring: 

  • Workshop kit mailed by the instructor

Required:

  • Needle with large eye (like this)
  • cutting mat
  • pencil
  • x-acto knife + extra blades
  • 12” ruler
  • Square ruler (like this or this or this)
  • awl
  • bone/teflon folder
  • glue stick
  • scissors
  • 2 small binder clips
  • mallet/hammer
  • scrap board (to protect table surface during hammering)

Optional:

  • Large smooth stone for burnishing (can find outside in nature…)
  • beeswax
  • scrap paper
  • pre-made wheat paste*
  • small brush to apply optional paste

*Your supply kit contains a tablespoon of wheat starch + instructions for making your own paste for the workshop. Making your own paste is completely optional; you can use a glue stick instead. But if you would like to make paste, you will also need the following:

  • tbsp measuring spoon
  • tiny whisk or chopstick
  • clean pyrex or microwave-safe cup
  • microwave
  • mini spatula or spoon
  • small fine mesh strainer
  • small brush for mixing (ideally 1/2" but you can use whatever you have)
  • small container with lid (to store the paste)

About the Instructor | Steph Rue

Steph Rue is an artist and papermaker, working primarily with paper and books as her medium. She is a 2018-2019 recipient of a Parent Artist Residency Award from Kala Art Institute and a 2015-2016 recipient of a Fulbright Arts Research Grant to South Korea, where she studied traditional bookbinding, papermaking, and printing. She has an MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book and a BA from Stanford University. Her artist books and paper works have been exhibited worldwide and are in numerous private and public collections. When she is not with her two young kids, she makes, dyes, prints, binds, weaves, and collages with paper out of her home studio in Sacramento.
