In this two-session online workshop on November 2 & 4, 2020 the instructor will guide students through mixing acrylic colors using a minimal palette to gain a basic understanding of color theory. We will focus on color theory, go over paint application techniques and layering washes. The skills covered are great for altering surfaces inside and outside of books. Students will gain the groundwork and understanding to further develop their knowledge of color and painting skills beyond this course and leave with their own handmade samples to reference in the future.


Materials to Bring: 

Acrylic Paints - recommended brands: Liquitex or Golden, soft body consistency. “Cadmium-free” and “Hues” are fine. For example: https://www.dickblick.com/products/liquitex-basics-acrylic-colors/

Colors: Titanium white, Cadmium red medium, Cadmium yellow medium, Cobalt blue, Alizarin crimson, Cadmium orange,Dioxazine purple/Violet Viridian (Green - not available in Liquitex Basics line)

  • Metal palette mixing knife (medium size)
  • Disposable palette paper (size 9"x 12" Recommended: Richeson grey matters)
  • A couple acrylic paint brushes (1 flat and 1 round, medium size between 8-10)
  • Acrylic canvas pad or acrylic pad paper (size 9"x12" Recommended: Fredrix Canvas Pad or Strathmore Acrylic Pad paper)
  • Acrylic Matte medium (8 oz.)
  • “The Masters” brush cleaner (2.5 oz) (optional)

Students should also have: pencil, ruler, compass (or something to draw circles with), water cup, rag

Students who choose to use/purchase different paint colors will have difficulty achieving the correct results in class.

About the Instructor | Rea Lynn de Guzman

Rea (pron. RAY-uh) Lynn de Guzman is a San Francisco-based educator, curator, and interdisciplinary artist, working in painting, print media, and sculpture. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited work in the US, and internationally in Australia, India, and the Philippines. In 2019-2020, she curated “Wander Woman,” and "Wander Woman 2," a group show series featuring Bay Area-based, immigrant, women artists of color. She has been featured in the Asian Journal Magazine, Hella Pinay, KQED Arts, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among other publications. She teaches art at the City College of San Francisco Extension, de Young Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Root Division, and the San Francisco Center for the Book.
