The San Francisco Center for the Book is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering more than 300 workshops each year in three broad categories: Printing, Binding, and Related Arts. Our workshop fees only cover about 40% of the cost and the balance is subsidized by grants and donations.
Workshops are offered on a year round basis, and registration begins as soon as the workshops are released online, and continues throughout the year. We are always adding new workshops, so please check back regularly as well as subscribe to the newsletter. You are encouraged to register early, as class size is limited and classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You may register in person, by phone, or online. Please note that we cannot reserve your place in a class without having received full payment. You will receive an e-mail confirmation when your registration is complete. If the class is already full, you will be placed on a wait list and notified if space becomes available. You will not be charged unless space becomes available. Registration in our classes is dependant on having a minimum number of people to cover the costs of the workshop. You will receive a reminder about the workshop approximately one week prior to the class. The class is not guaranteed to run if a minimum is not met. One week prior to the course, you will be advised if a workshop is at risk of being cancelled due to low enrollment. You will be notified two days prior to the workshop, if it will not run. If you are travelling to SFCB, please feel free to check in with us prior to finalizing your travel arrangements. If we cancel the workshop due to low enrollment, we will move you into the next available date for that workshop or issue you a credit.
Registration Cancelation Policy: We will issue a credit if you cancel seven or more business days before your workshop. The credit must be used within 6 months from the date of cancelation. If you cancel less than 7 or more business days before your workshop, no credit can be issued and you forfeit the workshop fee unless a wait list has been established and another student can take your place. If a wait list has been established, you will be notified and receive a class credit that must be used within 6 months. If your class is canceled by SFCB, you will get a refund via check within 2-4 weeks of the cancellation. Please do not hesitate to call us at 415-565-0545 with any questions.
Additional Workshop Policies: SFCB caters to students' needs by offering in-person, group and individual education by qualified instructors. For this reason, photography and video recording of workshops are prohibited unless specifically authorized by the workshop's instructor. Under no circumstances shall audio, video, or photography be published online or in print without prior authorization by SFCB. Any workshop class credit expires 6 months after the date it was issued.
Wait List Policy: SFCB creates wait lists for workshops that have reached their capacity of registered students. If a space opens up in a wait listed workshop, students on the wait list will be contacted both via email and phone; priority will be given to the first person signed up on the wait list. Workshop registration remains open until the time a workshop begins and SFCB may contact wait listed students up to 5pm the day of a workshop, if the workshop is on a weekday, or 5pm on the Friday before a workshop, if the workshop is on the weekend. To be able to provide the highest quality instruction to the students registered in a workshop and to be fair to those on the wait list, SFCB will not allow wait listed students who show up the day a workshop begins to attend the workshop unless previous arrangements have been made with SFCB. SFCB accepts no walk-ins to workshops; pre-registration is required.
Absence Policy for Multi-Session Workshops: It is the student's responsibility to attend each session of a multi-session workshop and handle scheduling conflicts. SFCB does not offer make-up sessions for any missed workshop days. If a student misses a workshop session, they need to make up what was missed in that session by hiring a tutor for a private lesson before the next session of the workshop. The SFCB tutoring rate is $60/hr and requests for tutors should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Students missing workshop sessions without private make-up sessions for any Core Curriculum workshop will not receive certification or be able to rent studio time. If you need to cancel your workshop registration, please refer to the Cancelation Policy above.
