Border books are able to contain more information than one would think at first glance due to three intricately folded pages that expand as they are turned. Some can even open up to create one complete image. In this workshop students will learn a variation on Keith Smith's amazing book structure mastered by the instructor, Macy Chadwick, her 2016 Small Plates book edition, Input/Output. While exploring this unique book format and working on book construction, students will be taught how to use collage, pochoir, and Xerox transfer to create original images in their own mock-ups. Each student will leave with their own border book prototype and plenty of inspiration to create more books in the future.

Materials to Bring: Images for collage and/or Xerox transfer, mark-making materials such as colored pencils, pens, images with interesting shapes and silhouettes for use in pochoir; optional pieces of poetry or your own writing to add content to the books.

Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: pencil, scissors, utility knives for cutting, glue sticks, bone folder, self-healing cutting mats.

Workshop + Materials Fee: $175.00

Past Student Reviews:

“Macy has such a great personality for making it OK to just try things out without worrying about making it 'perfect.'”

“In addition to her genteel personality, Macy was prepared with lots of inspiring examples and ideas she showed to us.”

“Macy has a nice, teacherly manner and quickly created a comfortable environment, which is important in a short workshop. The book format she presented is interesting and flexible. She clearly explained and demonstrated the material and was open to all questions. The handouts were helpful, too.”
