Paper is a unique material with a vast array of uses and techniques. We will briefly discuss the history of paper and papermaking methodologies. Paper is uniquely suited to sculpture with its variety of qualities and possibilities from smooth and strong to soft and weak. You will learn about the properties of paper and adhesives and how those characteristics can be used to make three-dimensional items. We will use, dampening, cutting, folding, wire armatures, and surface manipulation techniques. You will leave the class with a wealth of knowledge about paper and several small sculptures of your creation.


Materials to Bring:  

-Paper or objects you would like to incorporate into your work 

-Notebook and pen

About the Instructor | Claire Siepser

American artist Claire Siepser obtained her MFA in book arts and MA in printmaking from the University of Alabama after her BA in French Literature from Reed College. She has taught workshops at the Richmond Art Center, the Birmingham Art Museum, University of Alabama, and numerous other institutions. She has exhibited internationally, and her work is in many special collections including The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Yale, Duke, the Kinsey Institute, UCLA, and others. Her work primarily explores play, interactivity, accessibility, healing, activism, and alternative ways to approach books.
