Claire will teach you a varitey of bindings that offer a different approach to content and materials, especially those that are single sheets, don’t fold well, or are bifolds that create wedges. All the bindings made in this class open completely flat and are especially useful for geometric imagery.

The strip binding models will include the following editions that were designed by Claire Van Vliet. In this class you will make a simple slipcase for all the models:

  • RISE by Alan Loney
  • Waste Incant - text and images Susan Johanknecht
  • The Gospel of Mary – 2 versions of covers
  • The Silences Between by Keri Hulme
  • ABC by Judy Sgantas
  • If time allows, we will make two non-adhesive popups from The Gospel of Mary

About the Instructor | Claire Van Vliet

Claire Van Vliet was born in Ottawa, Canada in 1933. She earned her AB in 1952 from San Diego State University and MFA in 1954 from Claremont Graduate University in printmaking. She was an apprentice compositor in Germany and in the US at the Pickering Press. During the 1960s she taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the University of Wisconsin Madison where she initiated the bookmaking program. In 1966 Van Vliet moved to Vermont making a permanent home for her Janus Press which has, since 1955, published 120 editions combining literature with original prints and paperworks often working collaboratively with other artists and papermakers.

In 1989 Van Vliet received a MacArthur Prize Fellowship which she used to further her innovations in book structures publishing a manual on that work in 2001. Van Vliet was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in 1993 and in 2005, from San Diego State University. In 1995 she was elected to the National Academy in New York.

Claire Van Vliet has given numerous workshops on her innovations in book structures in New Zealand, Canada and the United States. Large collections of her Janus Press are in: The National Art Library, V & A London; National Library of Canada; McGill, Vermont,

Columbia, Minnesota, Louisiana State, Washington, and San Diego State University Libraries. The design archive of the press is in the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
