In this workshop, students will learn how to use typography 'graphically' in collage. Cubists, Dadaists, and Surrealists all expanded the way we look at letters. Students will use type as image and explore shape and forms of text by working in collage using a wide variety of papers, newspapers, magazines, and assorted ephemera that the instructor will provide. Students will leave class with three collages. Great for beginners interested in typography as well as artists who would like to incorporate text or letterforms into their work.

Materials to bring: Most materials are available at SFCB. However you may like to bring your own X-acto knife, scissors, samples of text from printed material (magazines, books, pamphlets, posters, signs, etc), letraset or small 3-D type (metal type), project board or heavy stock board to collage onto.

Workshop + Materials Fee: 75.00

About the Instructor | Mark Faigenbaum

Mark Faigenbaum works in mixed media and printmaking. He is drawn to objects that physically reflect the passage of time—decaying newspapers, old books, damaged photographs, outdated technical drawings and discarded machine parts. He combines these assorted materials using layering, repetition and assemblage to create shapes and patterns that move beyond purely physical representation to suggest invisible connections.

His work has been shown nationally and internationally. He has twice been an artist in residence at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and also at San Francisco Recycling and Disposal.
