Learn the basics of hand tooling in this one day class. We will make three plaquettes, or practice pieces, with roulettes (finishing wheels), handle letters, and an innovative handmade finishing tool known as a “fool’s tool” which Don Glaister invented for freehand tooling.
If you’ve wanted to learn how to tool books by hand with brass/bronze finishing tools but haven’t had the opportunity to get some practice with a teacher, this class is for you. We will fine tune the elements of getting a good impression: time, pressure, and temperature, as they apply to hand tools. We will also employ contemporary techniques used by fine binders such as Jana Pullman and Roger Green to learn how unique creative designs can be executed.
For the first two plaquettes, we will use finishing tools in the Center’s collection. For the third, we will use the freehand fool’s tool. Each student will receive a fool’s tool to take home and use.
>> Prerequisite: None, though having taken the Hot Type :: Titling & Tooling workshop or other stamping experience is desirable <<
Materials to Bring:
- Spring dividers, multiple pairs if possible
- .3mm-.5mm mechanical pencil or 3H-5H wooden drawing pencil
- Scalpel with pointy blades—bring several fresh blades if possible (#25 shape or #13 if smaller scalpel handle)
Date & Time: Sunday, September 22, 2024 :: 9:30am-5:30pm
Location: 375 Rhode Island St, San Francisco, CA 94103
NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close approximately three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class. We recommend you not wait to register, as workshops that don't meet our minimum enrollment will be canceled, sometimes as much as a week in advance.
