This is a two session online workshop.
A garden is a place of joy, solace, and reflection. In this class, students will encounter many book-making fundamentals while creating a paper sculpture with cut paper pages. Individual pages will provide freedom to experiment while the accordion structure lends the form its beautiful display. Add text or a poem and personalize the cover in your own style. All levels welcome.
Materials to Bring:
- Canson Mi-tientes paper:
About 13 pieces of 5 x 3" in your choice of color(s) for the cutouts
And
30 rectangles of Canson white or black paper 2 x 1.5" for the accordion sides
And
2 sheets 7 x 5" to cover the front and back boards (other paper, including decorative, can also be used for this)
Please feel free to include your favorite colors for flowers, leaves, insects.
Multi-color packs are available here
Or full-size single sheets here
Mi Tientes is also likely available at your local art store. The instructor prefers it but other cardstocks will work as well.
Also:
- 2 pieces of mat board, bookboard, or heavy chipboard 5 1/8 x 3 1/8". You can get mat scraps from your local frame store for cheap.
- 1/4" double-sided tape: The instructor likes Scor-pal but a good glue stick is an acceptable alternative.
- Scrap paper to practice drawing and cutting – printer paper is fine
Optional:
- 2 sheets 7 x 5” decorative paper to cover the boards if that’s preferred over using leftover Mi Tientes
Tools:
X-acto knife, #11 blades, bone folder, cutting mat, pencil, eraser, scissors, small ruler.

About the Instructor | Bhavna Mehta
Bhavna Mehta works with paper – cutting and embroidering it to tell stories that combine figurative imagery with botanical motifs, text and shadows. Using paper as skin and thread to connect and mend, using cutting and sewing to talk about exposing and hiding, she makes work about relating and remembering. Mehta has exhibited widely in San Diego and Southern California. She is the recipient of the Artists In Communities grant from the California Arts Council (2017, 2019) in partnership with Art Produce and the Creative Catalyst grant from The San Diego Foundation (2015) with Oceanside Museum of Art.
