The Nag Hammadi is the oldest known codex-style book (as Michael Burke put it, “The clever fellow who discovered the fold.”). The original is made with papyrus and leather, with closure ties on the three open sides.

This smaller, contemporary reworking of the structure has pages of handmade, cotton rag paper; linen attachments; and is covered with a single piece of leather. A linen closure attached with decorative beads and buttons is braided from the center of the flap to close the book. Students may further embellish the edge of the leather closure flap as they see fit. 

Materials to Bring: (Optional) Japanese hole punch (screw punch), scalpel (not an olfa—this is part of the materials fee, but feel free to bring your own if you have it).

About the Instructor | Brian Lieske

Brian wandered into SFCB several years ago and continues to haunt the place. He completed both the bookbinding and letterpress cores as well as several of the summer historic structure classes. He began vending his excess production and practice pieces at conventions a few years ago and developed this book for a local steampunk convention. He’s lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years having arrived shortly after completing an MFA at the University of Texas at Austin.
