Students will be introduced to working with both the flat/broad-edge brush and pointed/round brush to create a variety of hand styles such as San Serif, Serif, Casual Speed alphabets and Script lettering. This workshop is designed for students of all skill levels in order to explore the exciting field of brush lettering. 

By the end of the workshop students will have an understanding of how letters are constructed, layout-design principles, materials and how to integrate brush lettering into a variety of projects ranging from paper stationary, posters, hand-made books and watercolor paintings. 


Materials to Bring: No. 2 pencil, eraser, black gouache, 11 x 14 in. tracing paper pad, 2 plastic containers, ¼ inch Cotman Windsor & Newton Flat One Stroke synthetic brush (or equivalent), No. 4 watercolor synthetic round brush, 12 or 15 inch ruler

About the Instructor | Emmanuel Sevilla

Emmanuel Sevilla is an artist working in the fields of painting, sculpture and brush lettering. With a background in graphic design and commercial sign painting, he owned and operated One of a Sign, a sign making company in Los Angeles. He earned his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design, MFA from California College of the Arts, and was tradesman certified in Sign Graphics at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. He has exhibited work in New York, Maine, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. He currently lives and works in San Francisco where he teaches at City College of San Francisco, Root Division and guest lectures at California College of the Arts.
