ABOUT DOMINIC & MICHAEL

DOMINIC RILEY is an internationally renowned book restorer, fine binder, teacher and film maker. He undertakes work for institutions, book dealers and collectors, and his work is in many important collections worldwide. 

MICHAEL BURKE studied bookbinding with Dominic Riley and paper conservation with Karen Zukor. He researches the structures of ancient and medieval bindings and teaches at events across the UK and in the USA.

The Classic Leather Binding with Dominic Riley :: Monday-Friday, June 15-19, 2015 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

This intensive master class will introduce students to the classic (and luxurious) English leather binding, which was a popular style throughout the 17th & 18th centuries and is very useful for creating handsome “period” bindings.

Pastepapers Old and New with Michael Burke :: Saturday & Sunday, June 20 & 21, 2015 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

Pastepapers Old and New: A workshop with visiting instructor Michael Burke. Although know from around 1650, pastepapers were made popular in the mid-1700s by the Moravian Sisters of Herrnhut in Saxony. Recent study of these papers has sparked a revival of interest in them, and in this workshop Michael will introduce you to the methods, materials and patterns used on the original pastepapers.

Creative Gold and Leather Techniques with Dominic Riley ::  Monday-Friday, June 22-26, 2015 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

Dominic’s design bindings are known for their use of color, playfulness and experimentation. This class will introduce you to a range of techniques he uses in his creative work, including both innovative leather work and free-from gold tooling.

Library Style Binding with Michael Burke :: Saturday & Sunday, June 27 & 28, 2015 |  9:30am – 5:30pm

A two day workshop with visiting instructor Michael Burke. The Library Style is ideal for heavy books which get a lot of use and need to be extra strong, such a dictionaries, cook books or manuals.

Millimeter Binding Intensive with Michael Burke :: Monday-Friday, July 6-10, 2015 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

Spend a week exploring the elegance of the classic millimeter binding and its variations, and learn several techniques that are rarely explored in ordinary bindings.

Japanese Tissue Repairs for Leather Bindings with Dominic Riley :: Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12, 2015 | 9:30am – 5:30pm

When leather bindings break at the joints, the traditional approach is to reback the binding with leather. In this workshop, Dominic will show how to use Japanese tissue as an effective alternative.

St. Cuthbert’s Gospel of St. John :: The Oldest European Binding with Michael Burke :: Monday-Friday, July 13-17, 2015 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

St, Cuthbert’s Gospel is a small binding, very beautiful and exquisitely made, and is of tremendous importance to bookbinders not only as an example of early English binding, with its intriguing construction, but also for its decoration, which draws on both Islamic, Celtic, and Anglo-Saxon influences.
