Book Structure Essentials online workshop

- Instructor: Juliayn Coleman
- Workshop Type: Binding
- Workshop Status: Closed
- Workshop Start: February 11th, 2021 4:00 PM
- Workshop End: February 25th, 2021 6:30 PM
- Sessions: 3
This is a 3-session online workshop.
A fine binding, with perfectly pared leather, tooled in gold with colored leather onlays, is surely a beauty to behold. However, the design only lightly shrouds what lies beneath. The endsheets must provide an easy transition from the cover to the text. The shoulder should fit the exact thickness of the board—no more, no less. The round shape of the spine should facilitate the turning of the pages. The boards should be securely fastened, yet not so much so the book doesn’t open well.
In this online class, we will focus our attention on practicing the techniques of rounding and backing, lining the spine, and attaching boards—so that once you have your award-winning cover design worked out, you will also have a beautifully built structure to place it on.
• In session one, we will work on building the endsheets and sewing.
• In the second session, we will focus on rounding and backing, and we will look at two different ways to line a spine.
• In the third session, we will line boards and lace them on.
This online class is designed for bookbinders who have begun and/or completed the bookbinding core at SFCB (or have a similar level of bookbinding experience).
Please note that we will not be covering this book; it will remain a model and a reference for you to refer back to.
Materials:
After registration, students will be mailed a kit containing: text paper, cord, thread, boards, spine lining paper, leather spine liner, and board lining paper.
In addition, students will need:
- A job backer, finishing press, or Black & Decker Workmate
- Backing boards (like these or these or these)
- Backing hammer (new from Hollander's or Hewit, or similar from Etsy or Ebay--but if Etsy or Ebay, please clear your choice with the instructor first)
If you do not have access to these things you are welcome to enroll but you might find the class difficult or be unable to participate fully. If you are looking for a finishing press and backing boards, or a way to build a simple version, contact the instructor. There are many alternative options, and if you are interested in a class like this, you should have the tools you need.
AND:
Basic bookbinding tools: bone folder, awl, Olfa snap-off knife with cutting mat, sewing needle (bookbinder's needle or large darning needle), scissors, dividers, pencil, ruler without cork backing or metal straightedge, round glue brush, PVA adhesive, methylcellulose, wheat paste. SFCB sells bookbinding tool rolls in our store.
We recommend Colophon Book Arts and Hollanders, in addition to our neighbor Arch Art Supplies.
Workshop Fee (includes kit): $150
