This is a two-session online workshop, February 2 & 4, 2021.

Explore the fun and intuitive nature of collage in this introductory workshop. Students will be introduced to collage processes and will be able to explore several techniques based on personal interests. Students will develop compositional skills, a deeper understanding of depth, value, form, and color.

In the first class, we will begin with basic collage materials and applications, focusing on the concepts of value and composition. In the second class, we will expand our knowledge with layering and basic color theory, as we continue to emphasize the expressive nature of collage.

The class will balance instruction, a significant amount of work time/studio process, and casual class feedback. Come prepared to glue!

Materials to Bring:

Collage requires a good pile of ephemera to work with. We recommend you start collecting your materials immediately - every scrap headed for the recycling bin could have a future life as art!

  • Something to cut with: scissors and/or X-acto knife with replacement blades and a self-healing mat

  • Any of these adhesives: glue stick, elmer’s glue, mod podge, Yes! paste/glue, Acrylic Matte medium, or PVA glue, with appropriate brushes/applicators

  • Surfaces to work on: Bristol paper, cardboard, watercolor paper, or found recycled objects

  • Collage materials in a variety of colors/textures/weights: a collection of your personal photos/images/ ephemera, magazines, newspapers, old books, maps, special paper (colored, handmade, textured, tissue paper, found objects, etc.)

Workshop Fee: $80
