This workshop will cover a brief history of the art of collage and a variety of tools and techniques for kickstarting and enriching your practice. Students will learn where to source and how to work with a range of materials; the basics of design layout and color theory; and ways of creating tactility and relief.

You’ll focus on honing your vision as we go through scrap piles, identifying patterns and possibilities for juxtaposition, with an eye on the periphery, ready to capture any chance overlaps and happy accidents. Students will learn cutting tactics, tricks for working with adhesives, tips for planning compositions, and strategies for choosing substrates and finishes. We’ll touch on approaches to incorporating text and ways of using sequence to convey narrative. The workshop will emphasize collage’s tactile nature, looking at methods of building depth and appealing to the sense of touch.

Materials to Bring: Any magazines, photographs, discarded books, postcards, or other ephemera you may wish to use in your collage; X-acto knife, if desired for detail cutting.
