Design Your Own Patterns for Japanese Stab Binding

In this workshop, students will learn how to design and stitch their own unique stab binding pattern. First, the class will go through creative exercises to generate both abstract and figurative patterns. Design principles to ensure patterns can serve as stable, durable bindings will be addressed. Students will then learn how to use a free online
app to work out the stitch order for any pattern. Finally, everyone will construct and stitch two books of their own design. 


Materials to Bring: Please bring a laptop (Windows, Mac, or other) to access the app. If this is a barrier, please email the instructor who can arrange for one you can borrow.

Optional: Any decorative papers that may be desired for the covers.

Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: bone folder, glue brush, awl, bookbinding needles.
