San Francisco Center for the Book presents: A Hand Bookbinders of California Master Class Series | Simplified Binding

The Simplified Binding is a fun and safe way to do amazing things with book decoration.  Based on the onset board style of binding, this binding decorates the covers before applying them to the book.  This allows for an infinite amount of possibilities with decoration, and gives the binder the ability to be totally satisfied with their cover design before they apply it to the binding.

We will sew a textblock on tapes, using a triple folio end sheet.  Leather end bands will be added and then the spine will be covered with leather.  The covers can be decorated using any material you’d like!  But we’ll talk about the most basic, including wastepapers.

This is a great class for intermediate to advanced bookbinders with some leather binding experience and/or students that have completed Orientation to Leather.

Materials to Bring: Students will need to provide an edge Paring knife of Swiss, English, or French style (preferably Peachey; for guidance in buying an edge paring knife, please contact the instructor or SFCB). Students will have access to SFCB's leather paring machines (such as a brockman or scharfix) to work the small pieces of leather we’ll be using. Other required tools will be sewing needles, awl, small and large scissors, blade knife such as exacto, snap blade or scalpel with additional blades, 12" metric unbacked straight edge, bone or teflon folder, dividers, mechanical pencils, white grease/china markers, small triangle, small & medium adhesive brushes (paste and glue), micro spatula, paper and acrylics for the pastepapers, leather pieces 4x12 inches (preferably goat leather) of any thickness to be finished in class (only one finished pieces is needed but instructor recommends students bring multiple pieces in case of any mistakes made while paring).
