We will explore a variety of box and bowl structures that are made by scoring, folding, tucking, and sometimes sewing or gluing to finish the form.  These are FUN and easy boxes and bowls that can be used in many ways in your art & book making. Learn about the pros & cons of different box and bowl making materials PLUS learn how to use a rolling perforator to make stiffer materials easier to fold and manipulate.  


Materials to Bring: Rolling perforator (Olfa, etc.), 18"or longer ruler, bone folder, scissors, X-Acto type cutter, self-healing mat (16 x 20 or larger) for cutting templates, pencil, BALLPOINT PEN, materials you are drawn to (natural or manmade), scrap fabric, collage materials, rubber stamp images or alphabets, rubber stamp pads, permanent or water base markers, collage papers, metal scraps, threads & wire you like to use, corrugated cardboard, cover weight papers (larger the better as it will allow you to do BIG boxes & bowls), glue stick and / or PVA, paints, camera, notebook / sketchbook, latex or plastic gloves, apron, thread & needles you like to use, awls if you have them…

About the Instructor | Mark Wangberg

Mark has explored Natural Materials and Dyes in the Amazon and in California and leads trips to the Amazon with his wife Connie Grauds, who has been working in the Amazon for over 21 years.

Mark Wangberg has a lifelong passion for Book Arts, including his long experience in working with acclaimed book artist Hedi Kyle.

Mark has been making artist books for more than 40 years. He holds an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Artsin Philadelphia. He has taught book arts workshops across the U.S. and his work was included in Lark’s 500 Handmade Books. He founded Jack-In-The-Box Press in 1972.  He is also a published poet. 

His work has been exhibited nationally, internationally and at 23 Sandy Gallery, Water Gallery, MarinMOCA, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a solo show at RiskPress Gallery in Sebastol.  Recently he has been involved in presenting book, paste paper and marbling workshops for indigenous people in Africa and the Amazon.  

Mark has taught thousands of children and adults how to make books and teaches book arts (simple to complex binding, paste papers & marbling, etc.) as well as portfolio prep for college bound students. He also specializes in classes for teachers who want to make books in their classrooms!  Mark lives in San Rafael and Peru and teaches in the San Francisco area and the Amazon.
