The Surrealists permanently changed the way we see the world. They developed powerful and sustaining methods for the artist to connect to the deepest layers of the self and the psyche and to engage the viewer in these depths through the work of art. They pioneered radical visual and writing techniques for evoking powerful responses in the viewer. How did they do that? How can we do this in our own creative work?

This class will present a brief history of Surrealism and discuss the principles and techniques of the Surrealist methods as a “way of working” that can be applied to our own arts projects. Students will be guided through creating a collage/assemblage applying the principles and practices of Surrealism.
