This is a six week online workshop.

Explore artist’s books that defy conventional front-to-back reading. In this weekly, virtual workshop, students will make six styles of non-linear artist’s books, including one-sheet books, flexagons, dos-a-dos, French door, flag books, and volvelles. Each week they'll learn multiple variations of new book structures and techniques for adding content that work in tandem to create meaning with the non-traditional bookform.

Examples of artists' books that use these structures will be discussed. The group will also engage in brief idea generation exercises and friendly critique. Participants will have the option to participate in an editioned artist’s book exchange.

Over the course of six weeks, students will:

  • Develop knowledge and skills to create multiple non-linear structures
  • Gain confidence applying content to learned structures, as well as combining and modifying structures to support content
  • Examine work of contemporary book artists utilizing non-linear forms in artist’s books

Past Student Reviews:

"I loved this course so much. The concept of "non-linear" immediately caught my eye and this course was exactly in line with everything I was hoping it was going to be and more. Yuka is a very knowledgeable and excellent instructor. She does a great job of spelling things out in a way that is helpful for beginners but also for people who have more of a background in book arts."

“Yuka provided a warm environment for learning that was approachable for many skill levels. She covered basic skills, tools, and safety without going too in-depth and without making folks feel like they needed special (expensive tools and materials). The workshop was layered with invitations for learning and exploring book structures on many levels. I loved learning the structure, then seeing examples of variations on the structure with content, and ending with generative prompts that related to the structure we learned in class.”

"Yuka is such a fantastic teacher. I really love how every class was packed with information so we were busy the whole time, but nothing felt rushed. The way the class was structured with a new book format every week worked really well and I liked the way we built from simple to more complex versions in every class."
