This is an in-person workshop. As of January 2023, masks are strongly encouraged but not required, unless otherwise indicated.

If you've experimented with cutting your own stencils, you can further develop your skills in this hands-on, in-person workshop. Students will bring their own concepts or designs and with the instructor's guidance, translate those into stencil plates. The instructor will show examples of multi-plate constructions, and will share some tricks not covered in his previous basic paper stencil class.

Students will leave class with stencils for future use, as well as a better understanding of how to translate their concepts into multi-part stencils in the future.

 >> Prerequisite: The Versatile Paper Stencil (preferred); Introduction to Pochoir; or other stencil-cutting experience <<

Materials to Bring:

  • Small sketches or ideas for stencil images.
  • If you have any brushes, colors, or knives you're partial to, please bring them.

Date & Time: Saturday, March 25, 2023 :: 1-5pm

Location: 375 Rhode Island St, San Francisco, CA 94103

NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class.

About the Instructor | Tim Svenonius (he/him)

Tim Svenonius is a mixed-media artist whose work explores the intersections of history, memory and myth. A voracious reader and an avid researcher, his work is shaped by deep investigations into arcane knowledge and lore. He has worked for two decades in the museum field, as a designer, writer, and producer of digital media. In 2015 he self-published a monograph, A Book of Lost Latitudes, which explores the role of the whale in mythology and literature, through evocative drawings and found texts.

Past Student Reviews:

“Tim was very friendly and accessible, open to questions, encouraging, and a focused teacher.”

“He addressed many of my questions before I even asked them, so it seems he's given a lot of thought to student perspectives. His techniques of creating stencils are very unique, and his layering and registration refreshers were helpful for my own printmaking work. I was surprised at how much I learned at the end of the class, and he also discussed how to apply what we learned to other subjects. All in all, a great workshop.”
