Looking to create a book or album from individual sheets of paper? This binding structure has a bit of Victorian era flair, with cloth hinges that allow the pages to lay flat when open. Spacers are inserted between the hinges to allow room for later additions to the album: photographs, postcards, and other paper ephemera are ideal inclusions for this structure. A hard, cloth-covered case binding completes the polished result.

Students will build their album from pre-cut pieces and complete one album of approximately 12 x 10".

 >> Prerequisite: Bookbinding Core 1 :: Coptic Binding, or experience with working with glue on paper <<

Materials to Bring: None. All tools and materials will be provided.

Date & Time: Saturday, April 22, 2023 :: 9:30am-5:30pm

Location: 375 Rhode Island St, San Francisco, CA 94103

NOTE: Please read over the SFCB Registration Policies before signing up for a class. Registration will close three days prior to the start date of the workshop to allow the instructor time to prep materials for class.

About the Instructor | Bettina Pauly (she/her)

Bettina lives in San Francisco and works as both a book artist and a letterpress printer with Kim Vanderheiden at Painted Tongue Studios, Oakland, California. She loves books and boxes both as physical objects and as containers of meaning. She is interested in a variety of folded, sewn and woven structures in which she can incorporate her printing.

Past Student Reviews:

“Bettina is made to teach. She was easy to follow and made it interactive, fun and I don't think I've been this creative in a long time."

“Nice small group. Very helpful that Bettina did so much prep work so we had time to finish the project. Bettina explained things very well.”

“I liked learning a new binding that lays flat and can be used to present photos, prints, etc.”
