This is an in-person workshop. As of January 2023, masks are strongly encouraged but not required, unless otherwise indicated. 

This class introduces Monotype, the only printmaking technique where the end result is a single unique print. Since its inception in the 1640s, artists have used this variety of techniques to create unique prints.  In this class, students will mix inks and experiment with creating images directly on a plate, instead of a carved or inscribed surface. The imagery will only exist for the single print (and sometimes a second ghost print).  

The instructor will show additive and reductive techniques using brayers and brushes, as well as delve into the use of stencils to mask and reveal imagery.  Students will have the opportunity to explore layering colors with multiple printing stations, utilizing SFCB’s Vandercook presses. This technique lends itself to spontaneous experimentation, and often creates unexpected results!

Materials to Bring: 

• 400 Series Printmaking Paper, 8 x 10" Pad of 20 Sheets
• Thin Japanese paper like Masa or Sumi
• Any other assorted uncoated papers you'd like to try
• Any stencils or stencil-making supplies like washi tape; think flexible vinyl stencils or stickers

About the Instructor | Meri Brin (she/her)

Meri Brin has taught various Printmaking techniques around the Bay Area since 2007, including Silkscreen at Mission Grafica, Risography at the San Francisco Center for the Book, and as full-time faculty at Academy of Art University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in group shows from San Francisco, to Massachusetts, to Florence, Italy. Her prints are in private collections, as well as the Library of Congress. She has contributed artwork to Good Mail Day (Quarry Press) and Stoner Coffee Table Book (Chronicle Books). Besides teaching and making art, Meri also creates zines under the imprint Fixated Press.
