This is a two session online workshop.

This workshop is an introduction to the Japanese marbling technique of Suminagashi or “floating ink”. Participants will learn paper and ink preparation, as well as brush application techniques used to create a series of uniquely marbled ink prints on masa and kozo papers.

Experimentation is encouraged and all are welcome!
 

Materials to Bring: 

This list mentions a few alternatives that may be found around the house to minimize materials costs.

  • 1 Aitoh Boku-Undo Suminagashi Marbling Kit
  • 3 small calligraphy brushes in sizes 2 or 3; Alternative: 3 small acrylic / watercolor brushes
  • 1 2oz bottle of black sumi ink
  • 1 4oz bottle of wetting agent; Alternative: liquid dish soap
  • 1 sheet of masa paper 21 x 31”
  • 1 sheet of kozo paper 25 x 37”
  • 2 pans/trays for water at least 8” square, like this 8 x 10" tray; Alternative: baking pans like this. Trays/pans should be 2" deep and larger than the paper you wish to work with.
  • Ink palette (for black ink / colors); like this or this. Alternative: recycled containers / paper cups / small jars
  • 1 small container / small jar (for wetting agent) or any other small containers / paper cups
  • 1 cup / jar / used container for water for cleaning brushes
  • Paper towels / rags
  • Newsprint
  • Ruler for tearing paper, at least 12”
  • Alternative mark-making tools such as branches, a straw, tooth pic, fork...
  • Any additional papers participants would like to experiment with
  • Optional: students may bring a small, fine tip brush, like this, for water-tearing paper; alternative: use your calligraphy brush

Participants will need a flat surface with enough area to work as well as lay out prints to dry, and access to a sink for clean water.

Location: Online over Zoom.

About the Instructor | Solange Roberdeau

Solange Roberdeau is a visual artist and freelance art educator and she works primarily in paper, sumi ink and with contemporary gilding in her own studio practice. Solange received a BFA in Printmaking from RISD in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from MICA in 2012. She teaches private classes as well as has taught workshops in contemporary gilding at institutions including locally at Kala Art Institute, Berkeley; nationally at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore and internationally at Cairo American College, Egypt.
