Craftspeople of all skill levels will love this weekend workshop dedicated to the calligraphy and printing of Koch’s imposing yet playful Neuland script.
Rudolf Koch, an early 20th century German calligrapher and type designer, created a unique typeface by carving directly into metal. This funky, chunky face named Neuland was based on the letterforms Koch wrote out for manuscripts and carved into wood. It quickly became a favorite of calligraphers, woodblock artists, and graphic designers.
Blackletter fanatics Paul Shaw and Grendl Löfkvist will show you how to make these powerful capital letters with a calligraphic, broad-edged tool in the first half of class. You will then carve your letters into a medium for letterpress printing, and come away with a stunning poster printed on the Center’s Vandercook proof presses.
You’ll finish this workshop with the tools and skills to continue your calligraphic practice at home, and you’ll take away multiple prints of an original letterpress poster printed in your personal version of Neuland calligraphy!
Upon completion of this workshop, you will have learned/experienced:
• an understanding of the history of Neuland and its designer Rudolf Koch
• basic calligraphic skills
• basic carving skills
• ink mixing
• a taste of printing on the Vandercook cylinder presses
Materials to Bring: None, but wear clothes you won't mind getting inky!
