This is a two session online workshop.

The sewing card is a wonderful aid in learning how to master a simple to difficult sewing. Practicing the mechanics of any sewing on a piece of two-dimensional card is tantamount to working on an actual book.

Learn how to prepare and make sewing cards for a few different types of book structures in the first session. Take what you have learned and apply it to making an actual book in the second session. Students will choose which book to make once we have completed several types of sewing cards.

Materials for students to supply:

  • Thread for sewing, waxed or unwaxed is fine. Linen binding thread in any color will work, however other thread can be used such as embroidery thread or thread for leather work. Regular sewing thread cannot be used as it is too weak. Rosae's favorite waxed thread can be purchased from Amazon here. If you are interested in using embroidery thread, we can discuss the particulars of this during class.
  • Paper for books - regular 20lb copy paper can be used for this purpose. If you wish to use something nicer, try drawing paper that can be cut or torn down to whatever size you like.
  • Paper for covers of books: It is preferable that you have something with some stiffness such as a card stock weight. Rosae recommends using 12 x 12" scrapbooking papers for this as they are archival, come in many different colors and patterns and are inexpensive. These are perfect for making models as they are not cost prohibitive. Something like this would work fine.
  • Single color card stock, or heavy weight paper for sewing cards - something like this. This paper will be cut down so you will have extra.

Tools:

  • Snap-off knife (preferred) or X-acto knife with blades
  • Cutting mat
  • Bone folder
  • Awl
  • Metal ruler, or a plastic ruler with a metal cutting bar
  • Sewing needles: tapestry needles are preferred as they have large eyes and are not too pointy (bring a package, or at least four needles)
  • Scissors
  • Mechanical pencil

Optional:

  • Small triangle
  • Notebook for note taking
  • Double stick tape
