This is a two-session online workshop.

Using a contemporary version of gilding, the process of applying paper-thin sheets of metal to a surface, workshop participants will learn how to add metal to paper, wood and stone in their own shapes and patterns. Over the course of two 2-hour sessions, Solange will walk participants through the nuances of this technique from how to effectively prepare a variety of material surfaces and apply metal leaf as a compositional element.

No experience required, beginners welcome!

Materials to Bring: 

  • 1 ounce bottle red oxide fluid acrylic paint
  • 1 bottle of gilding size 
  • 1 bottle of gilding sealant
  • 1 packet of copper or composition gold leaf 
  • a small hake or other soft brush
  • a pair of soft cotton gloves or a piece of soft cotton fabric
  • several small calligraphy, acrylic or watercolor brushes of varying sizes
  • at least 3 different surfaces including a piece of Bristol paper (required). A rock and a piece of wood are recommended; fabric and other surfaces encouraged for experimentation
  • 3 8x10” sheets of wax paper
  • a pencil
  • a hair dryer
  • a straight edge ruler
  • 2 cups, 1 for water and 1 for fluid acrylic
  • a rag or paper towel

Location: Online over Zoom. SFCB online workshops are recorded; all registered students will have access to the videos for a month after the final meeting.

About the Instructor | Solange Roberdeau

Solange Roberdeau is a visual artist and freelance art educator and she works primarily in paper, sumi ink and with contemporary gilding in her own studio practice. Solange received a BFA in Printmaking from RISD in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from MICA in 2012. She teaches private classes as well as has taught workshops in contemporary gilding at institutions including locally at Kala Art Institute, Berkeley; nationally at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore and internationally at Cairo American College, Egypt.
