Does anyone actually “read” artists books? In our image-saturated world pictures tell powerful stories, but in an artist’s book a compelling mix of text and image can engage the reader in a more complete and nuanced way.

In this workshop we will explore the interactive relationship between language and art. Participants will begin with exercises emphasizing creative writing for artists, move through a selection of image-making techniques, and discussion of examples of how to effectively integrate text and image page to page. Simple folded structures will be utilized to encourage participants to focus on content through layered and overlapping concepts related to their own social/political/ecological and artistic interest.

Each participant will leave with a completed artist book prototype of original art and text plus ideas, strategies and resources to re-mix text and image more imaginatively in future artist book projects.

About the Instructor | Ellen Sheffield

Ellen Sheffield is a visual artist, poet and teacher based in Gambier, Ohio and the California Bay Area. Her works on paper and artist’s books play with image and text intersections to create unexpected readings. Collaborations with poets, experiments with found text and working with visual scores are some of the ways she engages with themes of place, memory and language perception.

The Beinecke Library at Yale University, the Ella Strong Denison Library at Scripps College, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and many others have collected her artist’s books.

She recently finished 14 years of teaching Book Arts in the Kenyon College Art Department and continues to teach virtual workshops for arts centers around the country.

Past Student Reviews:

"I think she does a great job of balancing presenting information and hands-on activities. Even if I don't have a lot of time to work with the ideas and strategies right now, I know that I will use them in the future. All of the examples of books and references that she shares are well-considered and valuable.”

“Ellen makes me think and this is so welcome. I'd take anything with her again and again and again.”

“Ellen helps me think "way outside of the box." Her way of helping me find my voice is unique, quirky and wonderful.”
