This is a four session ONLINE workshop:
Saturdays, May 7, 14, 21 & 28, 10-12pm Pacific time.

Get ready for a marbling graduate course!

In the world of Paper Marbling, metallics are rare due to the heavier weight of these types of pigments. Since marbling pigments must float perfectly on the surface of the water bath, metallics prove challenging. The use of rakes and combs is also tricky, requiring carefully manipulated movements of these heavy paints in order to achieve the desired effects without sinking or breakage.

This class will also explore the exciting territory of “Over-marbling”, where one pattern is superimposed upon another to create a magnificent and complex play of pattern. Pietro will introduce and demonstrate the most complex patterns in paper marbling with step by step instruction.

This workshop will build on the skills taught in Pietro's online Paper Marbling workshop and his in-person Introduction to Western Paper Marbling in-person workshop. Students must satisfy this prerequisite to enroll.

To increase difficulty and advance skills, this workshop will use larger paper than in the beginning Paper Marbling online workshop. The class fee includes an advanced kit that includes 7 large rakes, 4 metallic paints, and enough alum and carrageenan for the four class sessions.

Because of complications with international shipping, this class is only open to US students

Materials to Bring:

  • Mailed kit of marbling rakes, metallic paints, alum and carrageenan
  • 18 x 26 x 3 tray, like this. Students are encouraged to purchase a new tray - containers previously used for food or other applications will contain residue that will affect your results.
  • 80lb white paper, slightly smaller than the tray. Pietro recommends this but students can also use papers they have on hand as long as they're not glossy or semi-gloss.
  • Surfactant
  • Apron
  • Protected work surface and floor (i.e. use a dropcloth)
  • Hanging clothesline with pins or drying rack for wet paper

Past Student Reviews:

“I'm delighted to learn how to do marbling at home; adjusted for size. And Pietro is always a delight!”

“Pietro reminds us that art is a process and there is great fun in experimenting.  He teaches us the “rules” and then we can do what we want.”

“We consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have had the opportunity to learn paper marbling from Pietro. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, organized and a natural teacher.”

"Pietro’s directions were always good and the provided materials were excellent (love the rakes!). Having this as a four session zoom class gave time to work through the techniques and prepare materials for the next session."
