This is a two session online workshop.

Explore the fun and intuitive nature of collage in this continuation workshop following Introduction to Collage. Students will have the opportunity to explore several techniques based on unique, personal interests and narratives. Students will develop compositional skills, a deeper understanding of color, shape, space, form, and texture.

This session introduces two brand-new projects. In the first class, we will begin with an abstract botanical-inspired collage project, focusing on the compositional concepts of color, shapes, positive and negative space, and pattern. In the second class, we will work on an inside-out/reveal collage project, exploring layers, elements of surprise, lines, shapes, form, and texture.

The class will balance instruction, a significant amount of work time/studio process, and casual class feedback. This class is open to all levels and there are no prerequisites. Come prepared to glue!

Materials to Bring:

Collage requires a good pile of ephemera to work with. We recommend you start collecting your materials immediately - every scrap headed for the recycling bin could have a future life as art!

• Something to cut with: scissors and/or X-acto knife and a self-healing mat
• Any of these adhesives: glue stick, elmer’s glue, mod podge, Yes! paste/glue, Acrylic Matte medium, or PVA glue, with appropriate brushes/applicators
• Any of these surfaces to work on: Bristol paper, mixed media paper, watercolor paper, cardboard, found recycled objects, or a sketchbook (recommended sizes: between 9” x 12” - 12” x 16”)
• Collage materials in a variety of colors/textures/weights: a collection of your personal photos/images/ ephemera, magazines, newspapers, old books, maps, special paper (colored, handmade, textured, tissue paper, found objects, etc.)
• Optional drawing materials: pencil, ruler, eraser

About the Instructor | Rea Lynn de Guzman

Rea (pron. RAY-uh) Lynn de Guzman is a San Francisco-based educator, curator, and interdisciplinary artist, working in painting, print media, and sculpture. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited work in the US, and internationally in Australia, India, and the Philippines. In 2019-2020, she curated “Wander Woman,” and "Wander Woman 2," a group show series featuring Bay Area-based, immigrant, women artists of color. She has been featured in the Asian Journal Magazine, Hella Pinay, KQED Arts, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among other publications. She teaches art at the City College of San Francisco Extension, de Young Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Root Division, and the San Francisco Center for the Book.
