This is a two session online workshop, Monday May 31 (Memorial Day) and Thursday June 3, 4-6pm Pacific time.

Embroidery is traditionally practiced on fabric; however, it can be an extraordinary and surprising way to embellish prints, photographs, or even artist books.  In this two-session workshop, we will begin by looking at examples of artists who embroider on paper, and then move on to a discussion of the necessary delicacy and techniques for stitching on paper, selecting appropriate papers, and will conclude with the creation of a an embroidered paper “sampler”. 

In our second class, students will fold a simple accordion with pop-ups, and explore three-dimensional applications to embroidery on paper.  Students will leave the class with the beginnings of an embroidered artist book to complete on their own time. 

The instructor will mail a kit to each student containing: 6 skeins of embroidery floss in a variety of colors, embroidery needles, protective foam, and a piece of cardstock.

No experience with embroidery necessary.

Materials to Bring:

• Contents of mailed class kit: embroidery floss, needles, foam, and cardstock
• Paper for folding accordion measuring 5 in x 24 in. Recommended papers for embroidery – Fabriano Rosaspina or Stonehenge (120gsm preferred over 90)
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Eraser
• Bone Folder
• X-acto knife and cutting mat
• Paper Awl 

Optional:

• Needle threader
• Additional papers to incorporate into the book structure
• Additional embroidery floss or thread of your choice

About the Instructor | Michelle Wilson

Michelle Wilson is a fiber and print artist living in Oakland., CA whose work incorporates handmade paper, embroidery, and craft-based social practice. She has an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts, where she studied with Hedi Kyle. In 2019, in collaboration with the artist Anne Beck and almost 600 community participants, she completed the Rhinoceros Project, a monumental embroidery and hand papermaking project, which resulted in a 10 x 12 foot embroidery and handmade paper watermark based on the “Rhinoceros” print by Albrecht Durer. She is fascinated by the possibilities of paper as a material and as an object.
