This is a single-session online workshop.

This deceptively simple artists' book structure constructed of equilateral triangles hinged together can function equally well in a variety of ways: when held in the hand and read page by page in sequence as a traditional codex, on exhibit as a sculptural object, and as something delightful to play with. From an engineering standpoint, it is a close cousin of the maze book, cut and folded from a single sheet of paper.

This structure is not limited to a triangular shape. Squares, hexagons or possibly other shapes could work: any shape that will neatly nest together as in a quilt pattern.

Instruction will focus on both craft and content. Importance of creating and refining prototypes will be stressed. The detailed handout and model will be a valuable reference for future projects.

The workshop fee includes a kit containing paper, bookcloth, and a spacer.

Because of complications with international shipping, this class is only open to US students.

Materials to Bring:

Class kit mailed to you from SFCB (see details above)

Required:

• PVA and small brush
• letter-sized waste paper
• Teflon or bone folder
• small cutting mat
• small scissors
• metal straightedge that can be cut against, 12" is adequate
• X-Acto/scalpel/Olfa knife and extra blades
• 30/60/90 triangle. Note: these angles must be accurate. The neatness of this structure depends on the paper triangles being cut as accurately as possible.
• ¾” or 1” blue masking tape or similar easily removable tape 

Optional: 

• paint trim pad (this is neater than a brush and the ideal tool for the triangle book)
• black broad chisel point calligraphy marker 
• dividers (DO NOT purchase just for this workshop)
• covered brick or equivalent weight
• pressboards
• whatever tools not on this list you always find useful

About the Instructor | Karen Hanmer

Karen Hanmer’s artist-made books are physical manifestations of personal essays intertwining history, culture, politics, science and technology. She utilizes both traditional and contemporary book structures, and the work is often playful in content or format. Hanmer’s work is included in collections ranging from The British Library and the Library of Congress to Stanford University and Graceland. She has served on the editorial board of The Bonefolder, as Exhibitions Chair for the Guild of Book Workers, and as frequent exhibition curator and juror. She offers workshops and private instruction focusing on a solid foundation in traditional binding skills.
