Invented by reknowned book artist and conservator, Hedi Kyle, the blizzard book structure has many uses. They can hold almost anything from coupons, recipes, business cards and many other small treasures. This non-adhesive book structure has a spine made of folded pockets which hold text pages in place. Varying the relationship between accordion section width and the height will produce larger or smaller pockets in the spine. If the height to width ratio is more than 4, the structure becomes a ‘crown book’. Students will be able to explore both structures and fold a cover out of tyvek – a very strong industrial used material to keep your ‘new blizzard wallet’ safe.
Materials to Bring: Paint brush, notebook.
Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: bone folder, pencil, utility knife.

She teaches workshops at the San Francisco Center for the Book, the Academy of Art University and O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. Past Student Reviews:
“Book looked simple but was complex. Bettina was very helpful, supportive and patient.”
“Very welcoming and easy to work with. We covered a lot of information and 3 projects in just 3 hours. Four hours may have been better for the amount of information & technique we needed to learn.”
“Organized so that each next book added to what we had done for the previous one - built on experience.”
“Very well organized, excellent handout, materials all prepared for maximum advantage of the time. Liked that we got more than just the book structure - i.e. tyvek as a material and how it takes color.”
