Re-Imagining the Book :: Artists' Book Intensive

In this five-day intensive introductory class, the juxtaposition of text and image, placement on the page, and pacing used to create a narrative artist book will be the focus. Students will learn six book structures and a variety of image-making methods. There will be quick exercises to free up the hands and mind before moving onto more complex structures and concepts. In addition to printing with a selection of wood and metal type, linoleum blocks and pressure prints on a flat bed printing press, students will learn low-tech methods of image making such as gelatin printing, pochoir, trace monotypes and paper cutting.

The In the end participants will produce a small edition of a book of their choosing which they will trade with one another.

Materials to Bring: Small sharp scissors, soft pencil, mechanical pencil, square. Additionally: inspiration/imagery/ideas you may want to work from or with, paper you might want to use for covers, lino cut tools, honing jig, stencil brushes.

Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: Metal ruler, linen thread and beeswax, blunt tip needles, eraser, bone folder, glue brush, utility knife (if an X-acto knife is preferred, please bring your own), cutting mat, glue stick.

About the Instructor | Radha Pandey 

Radha Pandey is a papermaker and letterpress printer. She earned her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she studied Letterpress printing, Bookbinding, and Papermaking with a focus on Indo-Islamic Papermaking techniques.

Her artist’s books are held in over numerous public collections including the Library of Congress and Yale University. Currently, Radha is working on an artist book inspired by Mughal miniature paintings of botanicals from the 17th century.
