The accordion book structure presents endless opportunities for artists of all mediums: photography, collage, printmaking, or illustration (to name a few.) However, one of the challenges of this book structure is creating a perfectly folded book with straight angles and clean lines. Starting with the basics, students are introduced to “no-fail” folding methods, and then move forward into a handful of accordion folding variations. By the end of class, students have created both softcover and hardcover versions of accordion books, in addition to brainstorming ideas for future projects.

Materials to Bring: Right angle triangle (small or medium size is o.k.), materials or tools for mark-making such as rubber stamps, watercolor pencils, colored inks, ink pads, ect. (to use for cover decoration, if time.)

Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: bone folder, pencil, glue brush, scissors, awl, utility knife, metal ruler.
