In this workshop, you will construct a simple, case-bound book (the pages and the cover are made separately and then put together). The first half will deal with ways to decorate the textblock including coloring the edges of the book, making and attaching headbands, and ways to add endpapers to machine-sewn textblocks. After lunch, we’ll create the covers, including adding decorative corners and using heat transfer foil to add a bit of sparkle. We’ll then assemble the book.
Materials to Bring: Optional: Students are welcome to bring any decorative paper they would like to use on the cover.
Workshop Fee (includes $20.00 materials fee): $160.00

About the Instructor | Brian Lieske
Brian wandered into SFCB several years ago and continues to haunt the place. He completed both the bookbinding and letterpress cores as well as several of the summer historic structure classes. He enjoys making fully hand-sewn books and still fights to not over-tighten his kettle stitches. He’s lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years having arrived shortly after completing an MFA at the University of Texas at Austin.
