Whip your copperplate into shape, put it to work and take it into heretofore unexplored realms with flourishing, color and gold leaf. Students will learn flourishing styles, layout and composition techniques, ruling and addressing envelopes, and how to use gouache and gold leaf with their calligraphy.
Materials to Bring: Higgins Eternal black ink, sumi ink or favorite water-soluble black ink (non-waterproof); oblique pen holder (with a flexible metal flange or a screw flange); 3H pencil; 4 or more dinky dips; masking tape; any stiff, smooth board minimum 18” x 20”; a small water jar; distilled water; plastic squirt bottle (for distilled water; paper towels; Dr. Martin’s Pen White or Dr. Martin’s Bleedproof White; pad of 9” x 11” Canson Pro Layout Marker paper, two or three 35-mm film canisters (for mixing gouache and watercolor); round plastic pallet with 6+ wells; several #2 round brushes (synthetic).
Optional: slant board, students are welcome to bring a light table or light pad.

About the Instructor | Raoul Martinez
A copperplate calligrapher since 2010, Raoul has taught and demoed this elegant script throughout the Bay Area. His artwork has been shown at the San Francisco Public Library, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Filoli, the Presentation Center in Los Gatos and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Examples of his work can be seen at www.CalligraphybyRaoul.com. He has studied under Judy Detrick, Claude Dieterich, Heather Held, Michael Sull, Georgianna Greenwood, Pat Blair and Melissa Titone.
