Bookbinding Core Certificate Program

The San Francisco Center for the Book celebrates the craft and art of bookbinding. Our Bookbinding Core Certificate Program introduces students to four different binding models, leading them through the history and evolution of bookmaking.  It provides students a comprehensive foundation to delve into the practice of binding and qualifies them work in our bindery. Click here to learn more about the Bookbinding Core Certificate Program and find out how you may receive a discount on classes.

 Bookbinding Core 2 :: Flat-Back Case Binding

In this second Core Bookbinding class, students will create what most of us refer to as a hardbound book. In bookbinding terms, it is known as a case binding; where a sewn textblock is glued into a separate structure known as a case. Students will learn more about the mechanics of books as they build on skills from Core 1 and expand both their vocabulary and capabilities in and around the bindery.

Competencies Gained:

  • Build on skills from Core 1

  • Knowledge:

    • Mechanism and relationships of the elements of a bound book and case binding

    • Bookbinding materials: threads and tapes

  • Skills:

    • Spine gluing and lining, endsheets/flyleaves structure and application, endbands

    • Edge decoration (optional)

  • Equipment:

    • Finishing press

About the Instructor | Nina Eve Zeininger

Nina Eve Zeininger has been obsessed with books since before she could read when she received Harold and the Purple Crayon as a child. While earning her BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute, she took as many book and printmaking classes as possible and after graduating completed the Bookbinding Certificate program at the San Francisco Center for the Book. She now spends her time teaching book arts workshops throughout California, making and selling her printed and bookish wares, and playing fetch with her cats. You can view her work on her website ninaevezeininger.com and at her Etsy store neon sprinkles studio and follow her activities on her blog: Things I Make and Find.

Past Student Reviews:

“I liked that this is a form of binding that most people are very familiar with, as it allowed me to really get a sense for the construction of books and insight into how and why a binding may fail. Nina is also exceptionally patient, sets a great pace, and makes all of the steps digestible. I appreciate her dealing with my endless questions and uncertainties! She always puts positive spin on things, which is so crucial for beginners.”

“Nina is great! So patient and great and breaking things down into small, easily manageable segments.”

“The pace of the class was geared to the students needs. Everyone progressed as a group.

Nina outlined the agenda and the time frames at the start so we always knew where we were and what was next. She also took time to demonstrate each step several times so we had time to absorb the information before we tried it ourselves.”
