Digital Design for Letterpress is a new course intended for designers, illustrators, or printers who would like to improve their design and pre-press skills for letterpress. We will explore foundational print design concepts and how they translate to the letterpress process.
The following technical topics will be reviewed: editing raster (bitmap) and vector images in Photoshop and Illustrator; scanning photographic images and calligraphy and converting them into vector files; printing multiple colors, including overprinting; and basic principles of digital typography and the composition of images and text together in InDesign.
A useful pre-flight guide for film and photopolymer plate production will be provided for students to take home at the end of the class.
Students will then apply their new skills by preparing digital art files for film and plate production for the Polymer Core 2 :: Photopolymer Platemaking class.

About the Instructor | Lars Kim
Lars Kim is a designer and letterpress printer living in San Francisco. After several years in architecture and new media, she unexpectedly stumbled upon a Heidelberg Windmill and rediscovered the tactile beauty of letterpress. Since then, she has deepened her passion for typography as well as the technical aspects of print and bookbinding, working on a wide range of commercial and private projects. She happily continues to sling pixels and ink at Logos Graphics and her freelance practice, Solsken Design.
Past Student Reviews:
“The instructor was very knowledgeable, had great examples to show, and moved through the material at a pace that was slow enough to follow, yet quick enough to cover a lot of material.”
“Lars came to class very well prepared with examples, handouts and files to share. She also checked in several times with us students to see what our priorities were in learning the content of the class.”
“Lars was awesome! Very helpful, clear, pragmatic and insightful. Best of all, however, was how thoughtful and philosophical her approach is.”
“Truly, a delight. I’d be happy to take class after class from Lars!”
“Her experience and mastery of the topic was manifestly evident.”
