Learn about the history and technique of East Asian bookbinding and make two books in one day: the Korean side-stitch binding and the Japanese multi-section book. We will spend the morning preparing text blocks by binding folded sheets together with paper cords to create an inner binding, and then sew covers to the text blocks to make a Korean side-stitch book. In the afternoon, we will learn how to sew a Japanese multisection book, an unsupported soft-cover binding that lies flat when opened. All basic materials will be provided, but students will have the option of purchasing additional decorative paper for future projects. Some basic binding experience preferred but not required.

Past Student Reviews:

“Steph is incredibly creative and inspiring.”

“It was fun! Lots of good new information for my art practice. Teacher was excellent in how she demonstrated the process and in giving the handout as well as preparation of materials and tools to use. Also the examples she shared. Congenial small group with plenty of space for 4 people to work at a table. Appreciated the non-intrusive music in the background. Whole facility was a pleasure to be in.”

“Her modesty belies her expertise until you see her work and realize how much she truly knows. She’s a delight to be around—no big ego, no power trips or negativity.”
