Traditional bookbinding often involves folded pages sewn onto supports which ultimately get adhered to rigid boards and covered. This book, a variation on a model by Hedi Kyle, scales back those basic elements while retaining the structure. The result has paper tapes laced through a soft paper cover: a flexible, non-adhesive book that is both durable and accessible for journaling or sketching.
During this class, you will sew a text block and attach a soft paper cover, creating a lovely binding all without a drop of glue! The paper tapes that are laced through the sewing will be long enough to wrap around the cover of your finished journal and double as a closure. This journal is perfect to take with you wherever you go and write down notes: no smart phone, computer or tablet needed!
Materials to Bring: Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: bookbinding awl, needle, utility knife (it is recommended students bring their own), metal ruler or straight edge, self-healing cutting mat, writing utensil.
