Bookbinding meets origami in the Victorian puzzle purse: an entrancing little structure is made from a single sheet of paper. The beauty of this structure is the various layers of printing revealed as it unfolds. Working from a template to help determine layout and design, students will work together with SFCB’s vast lead and wood type and ornament collection to create an edition of themed puzzle purses. Novice and skilled printers and book artists alike are welcome. The instructor will lead students through the basics of letterpress from analog design and typesetting to operating a Vandercook Proof Press, troubleshooting, and finetuning final prints. The day wraps up with everyone learning the folding methods and leaving with a short run of puzzle purses they’ve printed.
