The Introduction to Bookbinding course teaches basic structures and stitches that every book artist should know in order to create a multitude of books. Discuss tools and materials for bookbinding and explore adhesives, paper types and uses, as well as grain for paper and book cloth. Learn a variety of structures—single-sheet book, accordion book, single-section pamphlet stitch, combined concertina, and Japanese stab—and make fun, simple books that can be turned into artists’ books.

The instructor will give a full overview of the San Francisco Center for the Book’s Bookbinding Program and how (and why) to obtain the SFCB Bookbinding Certificate.

About the Instructor | Nina Eve Zeininger

Nina Eve Zeininger has been obsessed with books since before she could read when she received Harold and the Purple Crayon as a child. While earning her BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute, she took as many book and printmaking classes as possible and after graduating completed the Bookbinding Certificate program at the San Francisco Center for the Book. She now spends her time teaching book arts workshops throughout California, making and selling her printed and bookish wares, and playing fetch with her cats. You can view her work on her website ninaevezeininger.com and at her Etsy store neon sprinkles studio and follow her activities on her blog: Things I Make and Find.

Past Student Reviews:

“Nina was very informative and packed a lot of information into the class while also making the experience very fun.”

“Nina was enthusiastic and terrific!”

“I just loved making so many books! Nina was so organized and the pace of the class was perfect. She was encouraging and open to questions and was full of information. I especially loved seeing her personal book samples of the type of book we had just learn to make. It was inspiring and fun to see additional samples for inspiration whether they were her own or another book artist.”
